Kathryn Gets The (Money)ball Rolling

It is being widely reported (Empire Online, Comingsoon.net, The Hollywood Reporter, New York Magazine amongst others) that Kathryn is in negotiations to star in a new movie called Moneyball.

The movie is an adaptation of the book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game by Michael Lewis, a non-fiction telling of the story of Billy Beane as he puts together the Oakland A’s baseball team on a limited budget.

Brad Pitt will star as the lead character with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Robin Wright amongst the big stars already signed-up for the film.  Kathryn is being earmarked for the role of Billy’s second wife.

Filming starts today (12 July 2010) and the movie is due for release next year.

As an aside it would appear that since leaving the WME agency in April Kathryn has signed with The Gersh Agency.  Hopefully the move will lead to more roles.

More news as we find it.

Update: I’ve spent a bit of time trying to pull together some information on the movie Moneyball.  You’ll find what I found after the jump.  Quite a tale it is too.

I’d never heard of this movie or Billy Beane before (having little interest in Brad Pitt or baseball) but both appear to have had quite a colourful history.  It’s been said that a film about the making of the film might be more interesting than the film itself.

Beane is the general manager of the Oakland Athletics Major League Baseball (MLB) team of Oakland, California.  In the mid-90s the team had significant financial issues and needed good results for the least money.  The analytical approaches to scouting for new baseball players developed by Beane meant they could pickup promising players before they became too expensive for the team to buy.

The techniques proved a great success, with the team nearly reversing the normal trend of the highest salaried teams scoring the most wins.  Beane became the subject Michael Lewis’s book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game, first published in 2003.  Because the book details those techniques they are now widely used but the A’s success continued.

So, that the basics.  Now it gets complicated.

This seems to be the gist it.  Brad Pitt has been involved since the beginning of the idea to turn the book into a movie.  Steve Zaillian wrote the original script in 2008.  Steven Soderbergh took over the project in 2009 and did a major re-write.  Just days away from production starting last June (2009) the plug was pulled by Sony executives.  It is possible that this was done because the movie had turned into more of a documentary that wasn’t felt to be commercial enough.  Next, Aaron Sorkin got involved to re-write the script again, this time with more humour in it.  Late in 2009 Bennett Miller was brought in to direct.  Things rumbled on with cast changes etc. but gained a fairly definite start date of this summer.  At the beginning of last month it was being reported that Zaillian was back to make further changes to the script he originally wrote but had been revised by several others since.  It must not be forgotten that the film requires the permission of the MLB before it can be released.  Phew!  You get all that?

Which brings us to today and the news that Kathryn is in talks to play Brad Pitt’s wife and filming is due to start next week.

What we don’t know is how big a role Kathryn would have.  I think we have to assume it will be closer to the Resurrecting The Champ size than a major role.

    Made my day! =D
Hopefully, she will work in that!

Thanks for the news!! Sounds good :O)

    Hello, RICHE
    very very great news
    AZERTY

  • It certainly glad my week *-*

    Kathryn Morris and Brad Pitt?
    – WONDERFUL!

Can not wait for new news.

  • Khaya

    Sounds promising!

  • icywinter2

That’s so cool, I wonder where the movie is filming? If she is still in negotations, how big is her part? Probably small right, correct me if I’m wrong.

I’m still hoping for her to go back onto TV, as well. Let’s just see.

  • Julie

    great news!
that’s gonna be awesome-Brad Pitt and Kathryn together :)

  • icywinter2

It also made AP news as well, hopefully everything will go through and Kathryn will be in the movie. According to IMDB, she still isn’t on the casting listings as of yet.

Perhaps an Oscar is in store for Kathryn, one could only hope since she never recieved an emmy for all the hard work she has done on Cold Case.

    Verrrrrry cool news!

  • I’ve added an update detailing some of the history to this movie, before it even starts filming.

The film is likely to be filming in an around California. Oakland, where Beane’s team is based, is in California after all.

This news has definitely spread widely. Adding Brad Pitt to any story is going to get it talked about. Of course all the stories are about Kathryn being in talks to sign, not that she definitely has the role yet.

Hopefully we’ll get more news soon.

On Comingsoon.net it now says her name underneath the casting listings.

Also I read that her role is going to be very small, much smaller than what she had in Ressurrecting the Champ. By that I mean, like not too much screentime. According to an article I had yesterday

    • icywinter2

Although we still don’t know if she actually has the part, I wonder if Comingsoon.net knows or just happen to put her name down assuming that she did??

Kathryn’s probably still in negigotions as we speak.

    • Many of the reports are basically saying (even in the headlines) that Kathryn has got the role, all though they do eventually say she is still in talks over it. Hopefully my piece makes things clear.

There have been many versions of the script and from what I gather the 2nd wife doesn’t appear at all in some and only very briefly in others. What the final script has in it I have no idea. I expect it will be a very small role, maybe just one or two scenes. Of course if CC had got an 8th season Kathryn would be busy filming that now, which might have made getting any film roles difficult. So this was probably a late decision. Hopefully this is a sign of Kathryn going for more film roles and is the first of many.

IMDb has and some reports have Frankie Ingrassia listed as Tara Beane. I believe that Tara was Billy’s 2nd wife, the role Kathryn is apparently after. IMDb lists Frankie as “uncredited” in Moneyball. Quite how a film that does not exist, and therefore doesn’t have credits, has someone uncredited is difficult to understand. I guess that someone just sent the info to IMDb as a rumour and it hasn’t been corrected. Frankie will be familiar to many here as Donna in the CC episode The Dealer.

Filming has just started and I’m sure there are still many things to be finalised.

I don’t think at this moment Kathryn has signed on. These articles are probably jumping ahead of themselves. They should be a bit accurate when it comes to things like that.

Hopefully Kathryn will, but if her part is small at least she’s in something. I’m still holding out hope that she returns to TV, but also all the luck to her.

She’s very talented, perhaps if she stars hopefully with Brad Pitt , this will lead her into better and bigger blockbuster roles.

Notice that Comingsoon.net does not even list “Mother’s little Helper’s” but only Moneyball. It’s a bit odd considering that Mother’s little helpers is due out in December of this year.

  • We hope Kathryn is the star in this new movie and we can enjoy her talent 😀

    • icywinter2

Brad Pitt clearly is going to be the star, Kathryn’s role is very small, according to an article.

      • icywinter2

Kathryn to us will always be the star :-). In this movie, she clearly isn’t the lead star.

      • I think KMS is hoping that Kathryn will be in the movie, as it still speculation at the moment as you know. I don’t think she is expecting Kathryn to be *the* star of it.

Kathryn will, of course, be the bright shining star of the film 😉

        • icywinter2

I wonder why comingsoon.net already lists Kathryn as part of the cast and IMDB hasn’t?

Hopefully she’ll be in this movie, a good film isn’t great without Kathryn in it :-)

          • It all comes down to how the information is added. I don’t know about comingsoon.net but much of IMDb is done by user submissions.

I assume that someone at comingsoon.net has decided to add Kathryn to Moneyball ahead of official confirmation. Unfortunately they’ve mis-spelt her name disconnecting it from her other work.

I’ve posted a number of updates to IMDb to help make Kathryn’s filmography more accurate.

  • icywinter2

Nothing’s been said offically, I’ve been checking. Someone could have just put her name there by mistake. Hopefully it would be a mistake, and be a sure thing.

  • All I ask, is that theres a hot, steamy sex scene :)
Brad Pitt + Kathryn Morris = SEXY 😉
    <3
    LOL

    • I think you might be disappointed with this film then Tianna. An early draft of the script apparently included reference to Beane (Pitt) sleeping with a waitress. Kathryn would never play a waitress *cough*. The scene was removed from the script in a later version because it wasn’t true and painted Beane in a bad light, which the MLB won’t accept.

Let’s look at your maths. As we all know:

      Kathryn Morris = SEXY

      That’s a constant :-)

      Substituting that gives us:

Brad Pitt + SEXY = SEXY

      Re-arranging gives us:

Brad Pitt = SEXY - SEXY

      Meaning that:

      Brad Pitt = 0

      Sounds about right :-)

Apologies for the maths lesson when many of you have finished school for the year :-)

      • Lolly

        HAHAHA.
        I prefer my equation.
        Kathryn Morris = sexy
Brad Pitt (without a beard) = sexy.

Sexy + Sexy = sexy squared.

So, Kathryn + Brad = sexy squared.

BUT, when you’re dealing with Kathryn you have to multiply by 2.

        So Kathryn = sexy squared
And if you add sexy to that, you get sexy to the third.

So Kathryn + Brad = Sexy to the third.

        😀

  • Icywinter2

I think all of us will be happy to see her in this movie once it’s comfirmed that she’s actually in this movie. As for romance all we probably will see is just her and brad kissing, since they are playing husband and wife.

    That kiss is hot enough.

  • I was looking on YouTube and … I found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgY_jcTyiMQ

About the film, and also to Kathryn.

  • icywinter2

Also IMDB still doesn’t list her or Rope of silcion, which doesn’t even list the movie.

There are other sources that don’t have her on the casting listings as of yet. I wonder how true comingsoon.net really is who has her listed.

Nothing else has been mentioned in AP news or other crediable news sources. But X17.com did mention Kathryn being in the movie, underneath a photo of Brad Pitt on the set of the movie, without his beard!

    • None of the major news networks are going to say anything until it is official. Everyone else, this site included, is working off The Hollywood Reporter rumour story. Repeated often enough these rumours become facts.

Don’t take comingsoon.net as anymore credible than anyone else. They have chosen to list her as a cast member, others haven’t. IMDb did list her briefly, I think, but it has gone. I posted an update to IMDb including her as rumoured. Updates can take a few days to turn up.

  • For what it’s worth Kathryn has been added to the cast list on IMDb. My submission included the character name and that it was still a rumour.
