Twit T-who? Twittergate

KM_UK: Hoping to be proved wrong about @kathrynmorris1 – Link

It’s been over a week now since Asher Levin (director of Kathryn’s forthcoming movie, Mother’s Little Helpers) “Tweeted” that Kathryn had a Twitter account.  It’s been 4 days since I posted the above Tweet (that still doesn’t sound right to me).

Unfortunately I’m left still hoping.

I’d like to explain the reasons behind my comment and few thoughts on the issue.

Kathryn’s Twitter account is apparently @KATHRYNMORRIS1.  The use of the “1” on the end of the name is not proof of anything other than the fact that @kathrynmorris and @kathryn_morris were already taken.  With so few characters available for use in Twitter account names (only alpha-numerics and the underscore) and there being more than one Kathryn Morris in the world, the options were limited.

The case (upper- or lower-case) of the account name is not important.  Twitter is not case-sensitive about account names.  @KATHRYNMORRIS1 is just the same as @kathrynmorris1, @KathrynMorris1 and @KaThRyNmOrRiS1, as those working links prove.  You can change the way it is written at any time in your profile.  You can address a message to any version, it will still work.

The fact that the account is not “Verified” isn’t significant.  The point behind the verified accounts is to protect people against others impersonation, and to assure followers that they are not being fooled by a fakes.  Obviously this is more likely to happen to a celebrity.  Twitter, the organisation, are still trailing the use of the verified account feature.  Lots of “celebs” do not have their accounts verfied, Demi Moore (@mrskutcher) for example, and she is one of the biggest “Twitterers” there is.

At some point quite recently Asher Levin changed his Twitter account details to show his name as “KATHRYN_MORRIS” and his bio, or notes, field says “actress”.  Why change this?  I can only assume that it was an attempt to attract more people to his account or a test to see if a pseudo-Kathryn account could be set up.  I raised this with Asher by Tweet and after initially not seeming to understand my point he ignored my follow-up.  The account is still that way at time of writing.

The lack of posts.  It strikes me as odd that nothing at all has been posted by @KathrynMorris1 in the past week.  I can understand that many people have created Twitter accounts and then not known what to do next.  You think that a “hello world” type message seems pathetic and you’re unsure about posting a comment to a celebrity you like, so you don’t post anything.  Later you find a friend has a Twitter account so you send messages to them.

In this case however, we have someone with a guaranteed immediate following.  Asher must have noticed that so many of the MLH-related Tweets he’d been getting had been references to Kathryn.  In that situation you would think you would leave announcing to the world that Kathryn had an account until such time that she was in a position to post an initial “hello”.

So, where does all that leave me?  Confused, that’s for sure.

Why aren’t any of the major stars of MLH following Kathryn?  Why isn’t Asher himself following Kathryn?  Why isn’t Kathryn following anyone?  I personally Tweeted (that definitely sounds wrong) Denise Richards (@denise_richards) about Kathryn joining Twitter and no response.  She’s not following Kathryn.

My feeling is that the account was primarily created by Asher himself, though I’m sure that Kathryn is well aware of it.  Perhaps Kathryn was supposed to use it but declined at the last minute, or wasn’t available.  Perhaps the speed by which fans locked on to it took them by surprise, the intention being to use the account when they next do some publicity for MLH.

Nearly everything above also applies to the account for a Graham Larson (@GRAHAM_LARSON), producer on MLH, that Asher announced at the same time as the Kathryn account.

I still hope I’m proved wrong though.

I think you’re right, Asher created it and maybe Kathryn doesn’t know about it :s That’s so weird because i can’t imagine Kathryn Morris let her fans totally lost. What can we do , when nobody want answer us ? Do something in our way !
What about asking people who’re following KM to sent a message to Asher and ask him the truth or a proof that KM really created this account ? I think he’s still in contact with her about the Movie why can’t he try to ask her to write something on her Twitter page?

Kathryn had once had said that she really doesn’t use the internet that much, and isn’t computer savvy. So I doubt that account was even hers. I think Asher was just joking around and purposely created it as a prank, without KM’s knowledge.

In any respect now, I think it’s just a prank twitter page and shouldn’t really be taken all that seriously. If it was hers, there would have more activity.

You read my mind. I totally agree with you, there are many things that do not fit in all this.

This appears to be strange indeed though it may not really be strange (either if Kathryn indeed opened that account herself or if someone did that for her):

    1) Kathryn probably uses the internet to check her e-mails only and in general she isn’t computer-savvy.
This is quite an important factor. I guess that everyone who never used twitter would need some time to get accustumed with it and now imagine what it must be like for Kathryn. It’s definitely hard for people who use the internet seldomly.
I’ve seen even people who work with computers and use the internet daily and extensively and still seem to have basically no clue about it. This makes me often wonder how’s that possible (but it is). For sure, they know what they want and where to get it but as soon as a problem occurs, they don’t know what to do and they are also so limited in their knowledge that they don’t find other resources on their own (mostly because they don’t know where & how to look and that that’s even possible at all). Sometimes, they are lacking even the most basic knowledge. Like a person living in New York knowing where his apartment is, how to get to work and where to buy the things he daily needs – but nothing else. So he can barely walk out of his ‘district’ and is more or less confined to it. Just as an example of what is possible and now imagine Kathryn who is probably even working less with the internet than those people I described (and this may also show that she doesn’t want to). She may have lost interest soon afterwards or not even know that her fans know (and care) about it).
We should not forget that what sets most internet experts apart (I’m now just talking about those surfing the web, not about the programmers, hackers or content creators like you RichE) from those people is simply experience on the one hand taking away fear and on the other hand sharpening your senses for the real dangers of the net. And also other seemingly basic things of being aware of people’s often rude and strange behaviour, the whole ads, different forms of websites and applications, etc.

    2) Another very important factor is time. Kathryn may not want to change her way of living and something like twitter may not fit into her schedule. The internet can be quite time consuming and while she may only need to look for internet access once she wants to check her e-mails she would have to change it completely. And then there’s always the question of what to write. She may neither know what to tell us nor want to (perhaps she prefers eye-contact while talking to others). I could fully understand that (maybe because I don’t like to write too much myself – and yes, I know that this may not sound too believable right now but I guess that the number of posts I write shows that.). I can only image what it must be like for a celebrity to sit in front of fan mail – and these are even letters where people writing probably quite a lot of stuff so you get to know much more about the fan (think of Eminem’s ‘Stan’ – hopefully I didn’t discredit myself with this fictious example too much) but we are not even talking about that but twitter where you are posting some sentence.
