Every so often on KM UK we have the great pleasure of bringing our dear readers (that’d be you) something a little different. Today is another of those days.

Canadian (Halifax, Nova Scotia to be more precise) band Dance Movie has made an album of songs inspired by female detectives on TV called Ladycops. Olivia Benson of Law & Order: SVU, The Killing‘s Sarah Linden, Jane Rizzoli of Rizzoli & Isles, and, of course, our very own Lilly Rush are each the subject of their own song on the EP.

Dance Movie’s vocalist and guitarist, Tara Thorne, who wrote the four songs, kindly agreed to do a Q&A-style interview for us at KM UK. You can read the results below.

If you have any questions for Tara then please post them as comments on this article and we’ll see if we can persuade her to drop by and reply.

Ladycops, was released on the 1st of September. It is available free to listen to on, or download from, Dance Movie’s Bandcamp page. The band also has a MySpace page and you can follow them on Twitter.

Update: Tara has allowed me to add the Rush track and a copy of the lyrics to the Gallery.

What inspired you to make an album about female detectives featured on television?

We finished our first full-length but I don’t have the money to put it out right now, and I didn’t want to lose momentum, didn’t want to have a huge gap between records. I wanted new material out there, but I’d finally exhausted the heartbrokenness I’d been writing about for two years.

I used to be a television panellist on a CBC program called Q, we would discuss product integration, the evolution of the theme song, the Emmys, et cetera. But that gig ended and I haven’t gotten to talk about TV in a meaningful way in a long time. I think cop shows get written off because there are so many of them — they aren’t critical darlings, no one writes New Yorker essays about how they are allegories for Shakespeare or the Bible — but a handful have these really great women at the centre. Those women share a lot of characteristics, and character history in some cases, and they all have a profound sadness about them, and I wanted to write about someone else’s sadness.

(I also wrote and directed a play called Law & Order: Musical Victims Unit in 2007—TV cops are a long-standing theme with me.)

How did you pick the detectives? Were there any special criteria you used in determining who you wanted to include?

Rush and Benson are my all-time favourite ladycops so I started with them, and the songs came really fast, on the same day. The Killing was wrapping up when I was writing and I was obsessed with it and Linden, and I’d fallen for Rizzoli & Isles the summer before; I had no idea Angie Harmon was so funny. I could’ve gone on — there’s Eames on Criminal Intent, Mary Shannon on In Plain Sight, even Scully from The X-Files — but those four songs were the perfect amount for an EP. I decided to record it really fast, really cheap, and it seemed too crazy to make anybody pay for it so that’s why it’s free. I actually said to the band, “If you don’t want to be associated with this project I understand” but they were up for it.

What, specifically, was it about Lilly Rush that appealed to you and made you want to write a song about her?

I came to Cold Case really late, the Nirvana episode. In that season was “The Road”, one of my favourites — it has that great Lilly speech I almost put on the record, “She found herself” — and it made me want to go back to the beginning. It is one of the most underrated television programs ever — it had a perfect ensemble, great music and writing, it was funny and tough and socially relevant in a way that transcended the topical approach of Law & Order — CC ripped from old headlines and had the historical perspective to treat them however they needed to. Being a Jerry Bruckheimer show on CBS meant it had no chance at being cool, plus CBS always handled it badly, they didn’t even give it a decent send-off.

A lot of what appealed to me about Lilly has to do with Kathryn’s performance, which was a bit Clarice Starling-informed, how she was trying to be so professional but her lower-class upbringing would seep out and she’d drop a “g” — nothin’ — and how she is this tiny ethereal blonde but had an obvious strength, she commanded respect. I liked how funny she could be: There is a scene in the first season where Lilly is walking away backwards from Kite, flustered because she likes him, and she bangs into a garbage can. It is a tiny, perfect moment of physical comedy — that’s what made me a fan of Kathryn’s, that little garbage-can ding. I was writing a script at the time, and I couldn’t figure out one of the characters, and as soon I saw that scene I knew who she was.

I think Lilly has a profound sadness that she never beat, and not because she didn’t make out with Scotty or anything stupid like that, but because her need to save people eclipsed the need to save herself. That stuff with the serial killer, she got herself into it! I wanted Stillman to scream at her for being too reckless with herself for the sake of the case. (That pair of George episodes is amazing.) She was always bringing closure to people who’d lost loved ones, but she never got any of her own — she never knew why she was attacked as a child, her mother died, she never found love, she did find her Dad but it wasn’t great, she got stuck with her fuckup sister and a baby — that’s why the refrain in the song is “Why did you run.” She is asking her father, her mother, her sister, the men she loved, the perps she didn’t catch: everyone.

Cold Case was known for incorporating period music into its storylines – whether that be from the 1920s, the 1950s, the 1980s or the present day. Were there any particular musical elements you felt drawn to use in the Lilly Rush track? Were you inspired by any of the existing episode music?

The melody is from an old song, one of the first I’d written but didn’t finish, so it’s super simple, four notes, because I am a shit guitar player, really. I did tell my drummer to play the opening beat from “Be My Baby.” We actually have an old-timey-sounding song on the full-length called “ANAF” (you can download it for free on the same site as Ladycops) and I wish I’d written it when Cold Case was still on the air so it could’ve been in an episode about the 50s.

When do feel most inspired to write music?

As Jenny Lewis said, “No one wants to pay to see your happiness,” so: When things are awful.

Give us a little background on how Dance Movie came together?

I joined my first band in 2008, playing bass in a grunge outfit called Bloodsport (like the Van Damme movie). The bass, which I had never played, really opened up my understanding of music, so I started writing my own stuff and gathered talented friends from Halifax to help me play it. I’ve been an arts journalist here for a decade, I know a lot of people, and they were willing to take a chance on me.

Knowing the character of Lilly Rush, what do you think she’d say about: a) the album, and b) her track?

a) I think she’d dig the record, I bet Lilly is into indie rock, probably chills to Regina Spektor and St. Vincent on the weekends, blasts Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Rilo Kiley in her car to get her hyped for the workday.

b) She would be embarrassed that someone is paying her that kind of attention, and possibly offended by how she comes off — she is invested in her work and its importance, and I don’t think she would care to have someone point out how lonely she is.

What would you say is the unifying theme of both the album and the characters?

Cops on TV are seen as badasses, running and shooting and screaming in faces. But underneath the toughness, these four women are all soft and sad and they do not want anyone to know — it would actually damage their careers if people knew (that’s the impetus behind the line “Call off your heart, they said” in “Rush”). You know how in musicals people sing what they can’t say? That’s what these songs are, to me.

If you could sum up the album in three words, what would they be and why?

“Call a bus!” (Cop-speak for ambulance. An ambulance for their hearts! And my craziness!)

What’s up next for you and Dance Movie?

Trying to get this damn full-length out. If you know anyone who likes to put out records, pass them along!

Many thanks to Tara for contacting us about Ladycops and taking the time to talk to us, and to friend-of-the-site LillyKat for her assistance.

It’s not a proper discussion-type of interview, more a simple question & answer session written up as a series of statements by Kathryn. We get Kathryn’s thoughts on her acceptance of her beautiful pale skin and the wish to challenge herself regularly.

The mention of filming in Canada a couple of summers previously (2006) will most likely have been Resurrecting The Champ, which appeared at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2007 and was released later that year.

Fearless Firsts

Kathryn Morris

The star of Cold Case reveals how she keeps her balance while staying on her toes

Kathryn Morris, 39, is best known for playing shy, afraid-to-be alone detective Lilly Rush on CBS’s hit show Cold Case. But in real life she pushes the envelope. “Each day I’m asking a little bit more of myself,” explains the Ohio native, who also appeared in the film Minority Report with Tom Cruise. “Trying something challenging helps me find a happy balance.” Here, Kathryn talks about the experiences that keep propelling her forward.

THE FIRST GIFT my parents gave me

When I was a child. I travelled with my parents and six siblings as a gospel singer. We had a group called Morris Code. Along the way I met ail kinds of people from different backgrounds and learned a great deal about tolerance. What I came away with is that you have to take everyone on an individual basis and assume that people really are trying to do their best in life – until they show you otherwise. That gift has served me well in my career.

THE FIRST TIME I truly appreciated my pale skin

I try not to obsess too much, but when I was a kid I used to hate my white skin because, back then, everyone always wanted a tan. As I got older and was going to my first prom, I wanted to have a tan, but it wasn’t happening. And I finally embraced my pale skin. I realized that maybe this is part of what makes me me – part of my package and spirit. I’m glad I did. I come from a long lime of farmers and have watched members of my family battle skin cancer – my father, for one. So now I wear SPF 45 sunscreen every day.

FIRST “alone doesn’t equal loneliness” lesson

A few summers ago I was working on a movie. And when I had free time, I’d drive to Lake Louise in Calgary, near where I was staying. I’d spend days taking photographs, going to lunch… just having quiet time with myself. Some people are friends with everybody. But I try to surround myself with positive people, or I choose to be alone. If I feel waves of negativity, I’ll just take a different turn and go down another hall. Those alone times – especially since I’ve become so busy – are great moments!

THE FIRST TIME I my comfort zone

A couple years ago I didn’t know how to swim very well underwater. So I decided to get my scuba certification. I learned it’s important to stretch myself a little but to not overdo it. Recently I had the opportunity to be the passenger in an Indy Formula car. So I did. We went 185 mph – it was so exhilarating. I felt like a new person after getting out of that car. I’m not an adrenaline junkie, but I feel like every once in a while I have to try something that’s not necessarily “in the box.” It’s an important secret to having a happier and healthier life. I think I might try motocross next.

THE FIRST IMPRESSION people have of me

I’m a more colorful person than my Cold Case character, Lilly. I’m more alive and I’m much warmer. People are always surprised by how much more vibrant I am. The things that bring me joy in life are as simple as taking a walk in the sun, having my two cats around at night while I’m doing the dishes, or hanging out with friends and family who love me for who I am.

Kathryn had just visited London (why didn’t you say you were coming?) with her sister and got to take in the sights and shops of London town between filming promos for Sky TV (the broadcaster of Cold Case in the UK that goes unnamed in the article). It sounds like she enjoyed her time greatly.

In the Gallery are scans of the magazine pages and after the jump is a transcript of the interview.

Kathryn, if you are ever visiting the UK again please do let me know. You can bunk with me to save on hotel

London Rush

The home of Sherlock Holmes, James Bond and Scotland Yard proved an irresistible getaway for Cold Case detective Kathryn Morris

ON COLD CASE, Detective Lilly Rush goes back in time every week to solve some of the toughest murder mysteries. So it’s no surprise the actress who portrays her, Kathryn Morris, would do a little time-travelling of her own during a recent trip to London. Although she didn’t close any cases while there, Morris did find time to see all the historic sites – and visit the Sherlock Holmes Museum (“Because I’m a detective, I thought it would be really fun to go see Sherlock Holmes’ office, she jokes). Watch! caught up with the Cold Case star to get the details on her British invasion.

Watch!: What did you think of London?

Kathryn Morris: I loved the city – it has such history. We were there for a week and went to Abbey Road. got to see Big Ben, go on the London Eye. I went with one of my sisters, and we got on one of those hokey double-decker bus tours. and we had the best time.
The bus tour is great because you can just hop on and off; they take you by all of the different beautiful churches like Westminster Abbey. There are so many stops along the way, and so many different things to see. We got off at the Tower of London, which was one of my favorite things to do. It’s where Henry VIII lived, and it’s just so historical and spooky at the same time. They go and show you where all of the beheadings took place – and that used to be entertainment! All of the different things that occurred inside the Tower of London – you just can’t believe that this is what you read about in history class. And then here you are, this is where Anne Boleyn was put for a really long time, and this is where Henry VIII used to sleep every night.

W: Any recommendations?

KM: I would highly recommend staying at the Dorchester Hotel, and having afternoon tea every day with a girlfriend. It’s a really great trip to do with a girlfriend or your sister. And then you can walk down to Oxford and Bond Street and do all the great shopping – they have everything from their famous department stores, like Harrods and Top Shop. Every girl has to know that you can pretty much spend several days in Top Shop and rolling around in all of the great fashion and shoes – it’s kind of ridiculous.
And then when you’re done, and you’ve had your tea at the Dorchester, there’ll be just enough time to go out to the theater and see a wonderful play. I got to see Judi Dench in Noel Coward’s play Hay Fever, which is fantastic. You know, the live theater there is just incredible, and to see Judi Dench perform live… all of the actors that have been training there since they were born.
Another thing to do is go to Covent Garden. Just go and hang around in the shops and the open air and the great cafés and great little shops and cobblestone streets.

W: Anything you didn’t get to do but want to next time?

KM: The Jack the Ripper tour across the street from the Tower of London – the next time I go back 1m going to do that.
And if you really want to get crazy – I didn’t get to do this but I would like to do it next time – take the Chunnel. You take the Eurostar first class to Paris for the day, go shopping and come back.
And then my hairdresser on the show – she’s from London – was telling me that I have got to go out to Knightsbridge and go to Harvey Nichols, which is where Princess Di used to shop, instead of Harrods. There’s always a competition between Harrods and Harvey Nichols, but I’m going to go with Princess Di.

W: Did you bring anything back from your trip?

KM: My sister and I went into the gift shop at the Tower of London, and they had all these board games. One was called Outrage – it’s a game where it’s all about trying to get the crown. It’s like Scrabble, but for kings, or like Monopoly, but for getting the crown. And then you know you’ve got to get your British socks with the flag and, Derby hats and Sherlock Holmes hats and stuff like that for your relatives. And you’ve got to get your tea.

W: How were the people there?

KM: Oh, they’re so lovely! All of the boys look kind of like Jude Law, and they all dress really well. They were just really friendly. You get the range of people that
come from the upper class, and then the real Cockney types. We went into a pub to get some fish and chips, and you sometimes couldn’t understand what they were saying. But, you know, when in Rome… You don’t want to be rude, so you just sort of look down at the menu and try to figure it out. It was like, “OK, I don’t know what she said, but I’m going to go ahead and order the shepherd’s pie.”

W: How was the food?

KM: I actually think they have some of the best Indian food in the world there. Indian food is a real speciality in England. And they’ve clearly worked on their food situation: sometimes they get a lot of heat for it. I’m not a big fan of the traditional English food, but there’s so much there now that you can have pretty much anything in every style. If you like Indian food, it’s a really great place for that.

W: So do you see Cold Case ever doing an on-location shoot in London?

KM: I did do some promos for [the British broadcaster airing Cold Case]. And that’s an interesting story because they wanted me to do all these stylized HBO-type of promos, where they built this fake Cold Case room, and I was saying things like “Murder is murder” in a British accent. Very Agatha Christie-like. It was sort of like dinner theater. “Murder is murder. And I won’t let you get away with it.” So we did all these campy takes on Lilly Rush.

W: Is there something that you always prefer to bring with you?

KM: I have these long john shirts that are different colors and they’re great for layering. I have one that’s pink and one’s green and one’s blue and has a little logo with tiny flowers on it. And it seems like no matter what time of year, they make me feel that I’m always at home… It’s like a staple, you know? Cute long underwear that can double as a layer. And one cute coat. You should always have one cute coat with you because then it can work for going to dinner or going to theater, or if you have to do an interview at the last second and you’re really on vacation. Girls should just walk around with a cute coat.

This one is all about Cold Case and has an interview with Kathryn. However, it is the same interviewer as the recent Télé Star article and largely the same questions and answers. I understand that both magazines are from the same publisher

Exclusif Cold Case

KATHRYN MORRIS

“L’ARRÊT DE COLD CASE ME REND TRISTE…”

Exclusive Cold Case

On set at the last shoot

I find myself at 10.00 am, for the fourth consecutive year on the Warner Bros. 22 lot where the filming of “Cold Case” happens. For the last time too, as the team puts in the can one of the last episodes. Already last year, one series had to be cancelled and it was “Without a Trace” that was chosen to be sacrificed. The reprieve was short-lived.

Kathryn Morris welcomes me a few minutes after my arrival. Filming began very early, around 7.30am. Alex Zakrzewski, a Polish director, is in charge of this episode titled “Almost Paradise”. “With Alex, everything goes very quickly, he has already directed several episodes and knows the subject matter,” says Adam Glass, one of the producers. Before resuming her scene, Kathryn wonders about the audience figures of “Cold Case” in France. She is a little surprised when I told her that they are excellent: “I was in Montreal some time ago, and as it was -10ºC, I wore a balaclava. Despite this, French tourists managed to recognise me. I could not believe it!”

She quickly rejoined the team of investigators assembled on the set of the squad room. So, between rehearsals and close-ups of each actor, the scene takes two hours. In purple shirt and tie, Danny Pino beckons me to follow him in to his dressing room for an interview. Always available and friendly, he confesses to be delighted to have written the script for an episode of the new season which takes place in a circus in the mid 70s. “I ended the day and at night, I went into the offices of the production with Adam Glass to write this episode, which is accompanied by only the songs of the Doors!” After thirty-minute interview, he meets Kathryn Morris on the set. She sports a ponytail and an elegant blouse. They do a scene alone together. In thirty minutes she is done. It’s lunch break. Kathryn dons an anorak as the air conditioning is running at full blast! The actress gives me her impressions on these new episodes and tells me that she hoped the series would continue for some time …

In the afternoon, between scenes, I find her trying to send text messages like a teenager. I find myself in the room where the producer and director are viewing the footage. Nearby, Danny graciously lends himself to measurements of a technician, meter in hand, who measures the distance from his face to the camera. Late afternoon, I leave the set. It is with a twinge in my heart that I realized that I had the privilege of attending a recent filming of “Cold Case.” I was used to rendezvous with Lilly Rush …

KATHRYN MORRIS

“COLD CASE ENDING MAKES ME SAD…”

Our reporter met with Kathryn Morris who delivered her first impressions of the announcement of series coming to an end. Exclusive.

“Cold Case” has ended. How did you take the new?

Kathryn Morris: We still had so many stories to still to tell and episodes to make. Especially since during this past season, the writers and producers had made a lot of changes, particularly in the last ten episodes, to inject even more energy, while preserving the characteristics of the series.

Regrets, then?

It is very rare to see a series that lasts seven years. There was something magical about “Cold Case”: the concept, distribution, how to work with any team. There was always a lot of discipline and at the same time, a lot of passion. I’m a little sad.

What episode did you find most moving of the 156 you made?

The last two episodes of Season 6. First, because I play a flashback scene in which you see me get into the police and also because I’m in the same episode, ended an investigation when I am between life and death. My car starts flowing and try to get out… We even see Lilly Rush, my character, as a child. That’s the daughter of my partner, David, who played the character. I must say that his performance is great.

And love during these seven years?

Love is not really the drive of Lilly! She is married to her job instead. She’s a very lonely woman, a bit of a lone wolf.

But she did have some relationships…

This year she has the opportunity to join the FBI as an agent, with Johnny Messner starring as Ryan Cavanaugh, leaves an impression. And then, Bobby Cannavale, who plays the role of Eddie Saccardo, returns this time for three episodes …

Can give us some scoop on the latest episodes?

Lilly will have to make a lot of personal choices. She survived so many injuries in recent times: she was shot, she nearly drowned… There comes a point where she wondered what she would like to do with her life. The series will conclude the theme of forgiveness to her family, to a man. And for all this, it does not necessarily follow the law.

The series stops but how would you imagine Lilly in fifteen years?

There is a new person, a female who becomes very close to Lilly, and that could be like her in fifteen years. Susanna Thompson is the actress who plays Diane Yates, for three episodes. She just solve cases. She has no man in her life, she is alone, rather surly, exactly what Lilly might be in fifteen years if she does not question. And in recent episodes, we see her family returning. Especially her sister, Christina, who has disappointed many. But Lilly will be compassionate.

Now that you no longer have the pressure of filming, do you think of marriage, since you live many years with director David Barrett?

Many Americans grow up with the dream of living a fairy tale, with beautiful wedding dress, Prince Charming … Me, my life already looks like a fairy tale so I experienced extraordinary things. Wedding or not, I’m with David for eight years and that is rare. Especially in Hollywood!

Entente cordiale!

It’s the turn of TV Grande Chaines, another French TV magazine, to have a brief interview with Kathryn about the return of Cold Case to the small screens of France. This one has the anecdote about the woman and her dead dog.

A scan from the magazine can now be found in the Gallery and a transcript and rough translation can be found below. The included photos are ones we’ve seen before.

Kathryn Morris

Kathryn Morris

“At school they used to call me the blonde avenger!”

The detective Cold Case returns with new surveys. I met her at the Golden Globes ceremony.

Your character, Lilly Rush, always solves forgotten old cases. But the real clear up rate of these cases in the United States is only 35%…

I think that viewers would not really stay if the heroine had not been ultra efficient! You will find however, that before filing a case, Lilly goes through difficult stages. She’s even often doubted. From a screenwriting point of view, we try to get as close as possible to the methods of police investigation. To play my character better, I also met a lot of detectives.

Do you have points in common with her?

Yes. The thirst for knowledge and the fact of never giving up! Like her, I love helping people, I make myself available to support them in life. Furthermore, I can not stand injustice and I invest myself fully to restore truth. Even at school, in the playground I was going in when they were attacking the younger ones. They called me “the blonde avenger!”

Are you aware of being one of the sexiest police officers on TV?

It is the show that should be in the spotlight. Not me. I am there to serve the story. I’m just a device. When I see my head on the cover of a magazine, I do not understand why I deserve this. I am born in Cincinnati, Ohio. Over there, we are down to earth!

How do you explain your success in France?

If you look closely at Lilly Rush, we see that behind her apparent coldness, she’s very human. And that is the perception I have of you, the French. At first, you’re not open to others, you tend to keep a certain distance. But once you trust someone, your friendship is unwavering. I love getting mail from the French public! These letters are always adorable. And there are often beautiful stamps on envelopes. It is a way for me to travel to your beautiful regions.

Your fans, they sometimes confuse you with Lilly Rush?

Yes, I’m afraid so! One evening, a lady asked me to investigate the suspicious death of her chihuahua twenty years earlier in exchange for a reward. I advised her to go to her local animal protection league or veterinarian. That infuriated her. On leaving, she barked: “If you are so talented, you would go into my garden, and dig up the remains of my dog, and you’d find the cause of death by analyzing his DNA!”

Télé Star magazine steps up with a short interview with Kathryn to help promote the launching of Cold Case season 7 on the channel France 2.

A scan of the page can be found in the Gallery. Sadly it does not include any new photos. After the jump you can find a transcript of the French text and another of my Google-assisted attempts at an English translation.

Kathryn Morris

Kathryn Morris

“The end of Cold Case makes me sad”

At age 41, Kathryn Morris says farewell Lilly Rush, her popular character. Cold Case has just ended in the US. The actress says she is saddened, but she was already thinking about the future

TÉLÉ STAR: At the end of Season 7, Cold Case stops permanently. How do you cope with this decision?

KATHRYN MORRIS: We still had so many stories to tell, so many episodes to make. Especially since in this last season the writers and producers had changed a lot things, especially in the last ten episodes to inject even more energy investigations. This gave a facelift to the series.

This means that you have regrets?

KM: It’s very rare to have a series that lasts seven years. I always said that there was something magical about Cold Case: the concept, distribution, how to work with any team. I’m a little sad, it’s normal! But I am a great optimist and I’m already thinking about the future.

What do you consider the most moving episode of the more than 150 that you shot?

KM: The 2 part finale of season 6 was certainly the most exciting to play. First, because a flashback happens when I go into the police. And also because Lilly, my character, is between life and death. But I shall say no more, if you have not seen… It was funny to see the daughter of my friend, David (she lives with director David Barrett, ed), take my role as a child. (She smiles.)

Can you give us more information on the latest episodes?

KM: This year, Lilly will have to make personal choices. She will ask what they want to do long term. This may be an opportunity for her to leave the path she had marked out for years.

Now that you no longer have the pressure of filming, do you think of marriage?

KM: I’m a modern woman and at the same time very traditional, rather romantic. Many Americans grow up dreaming of a wedding like Cinderella. For me, my life already looks like a fairy tale. Wedding or not, I’ve been with David for eight years and that is rare, especially in Hollywood!

Interview by Franck Ragaine

Inset:

Soon to in a couple with Brad Pitt

Kathryn Morris did not wait long to find roles. She will play the wife of Brad Pitt in Moneyball (released in 2011). Meanwhile, Americans will see her in Mother’s Little Helpers, a comedy with Jim Belushi and Denise Richards.

EN COUVERTURE CETTE SEMAINE

PAR SUSAN WILSON

Kathryn Morris

Donc on a répété beaucoup…

ON THE COVER THIS WEEK

BY SUSAN WILSON

Kathryn Morris

LILLY RUSH IN DANGER

It’s official, Lilly Rush packs up and retires at the end of season 7 that is now being broadcast on Canal+. France 2, meanwhile, has begun the 6th season of “Cold Case.” So get ready to take in more fascinating cases and look more into the private life and past of the heroine.

Already last year, given the ratings and increased production costs, Cold Case and Without A Trace were in the crosshairs of CBS. The network could only keep one show. At the time, Cold Case won but the reprieve was short-lived, lasting for just one more season, the seventh. This is the delightful Kathryn Morris (41 years) who since 2003 has played Lilly Rush, the detective in all 156 episodes. Before this series made her famous, she had been seen in two films by Steven Spielberg, AI and Minority Report.

You moved to TV after having tasted the world of cinema. How did you find it?

I admit that was incredible to work with stars like Tom Cruise and Jude Law. But for me Cold Case was a dream come true, probably because nobody had anticipated that this rather quiet series, unspectacular in the sense that there is no prosecution, explosions, fights, crashes… would achieve such success worldwide. I get recognized on the street. At the restaurant, people approach me saying, “Hi Lilly!” I became a friend, a friend who is in their home once a week. That feeling, that only a role in a series that can give.

This character will you miss her?

I loved playing Lilly Rush, a woman in a world normally dominated by men. She conducts the investigations in a nice way, and the emotional can be read on her face. In a way that a cop does not normally do. Like it is so hard and brittle at the same time. I love that she is so feminine despite her look in a few … parts (Laughter), is strict. She is not interested in all that, she does not feel the need to assert her femininity over men, she has neither the time nor the desire to primp… But when she looks in the mirror in the morning, she said, “OK, that’s how it goes…” (Laughter) In the final two parts of season 6, you’ll find four sides of Lilly, from childhood… The moments that define her life, her character, who she is. We understand why it is that way today. There are lots of surprises, you’ll see…

Do you have anything in common with the character?

I think I like her well-defined concept of what is right and wrong… or to put it in a more biblical way: good and evil. I cannot stand injustice, whether it’s for me or others. In contrast, I’m much happier that I laugh more, I enjoy myself more. (Laughter)

Cold Case follows an entirely different concept than the usual police series produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, like CSI or Without A Trace…

That’s true. On CSI, it is the forensic research that is the focus. It explains everything in detail, the technical process is very high tech. Cold Case is not interested in that aspect of the investigation. We never forget that it is a humanbeing. Men and women looking for answers, sometimes decades after the crime. Cold Case takes the time to define deeper characters, like the relatives of a victim and, through flashbacks, the victims themselves who, in other shows, often have the role of just a body. And there were no “Naked Chicks”, girls in bikinis, as in CSI: Miami. (Laughter)

At the end of season 6, Lilly is in mortal danger, her car plunges into a river. A real plunge for you. How was the filming of that scene?

It was quite physical for me. With the stunt coordinator and director (David Barrett – ed) – who at the time was my boyfriend and comes from the stunt world – we worked together to find ways to make this scene the coolest possible so that viewers can see that it’s really me, underwater. So we rehearsed a lot… You know, it was nice to have butterflies in your stomach, you have to go anyway! (Laughter)

So your boyfriend has put you in a variety of deadly situations?

I knew I was safe, and in the end, it was a lot of fun.

And the future?

I just shot a movie: Mother’s Little Helpers, a film by Asher Levin, where I play a kind of Mrs. Robinson. (Laughs) Otherwise, I have my eye on some projects for the big screen, and maybe there will be another series that will interest me. We’ll see, everything is open.

Nine 10 smallish images have been added to the Gallery. These will, of course, be upgraded to full-sized versions as and when they become available. Also, a short interview with Kathryn at the event has been included in which she talks about working with PSH and Brad Pitt on Moneyball. This gives us confirmation, straight from the horses mouth so to speak, that Kathryn is in the movie.

Doesn’t Kathryn look lovely in her “LBD” and cute shoes?

The future of Cold Case was mentioned but largely sidestepped. Kathryn was not going to say whether it’s been been renewed or not because I doubt she knows at this point. Plus, she is hardly going to act as though she feels it is bound to happen either. Her “Cold Case never dies” line was nice.

Of course Kathryn mentioned Mother’s Little Helpers. She likened it to the Tom Cruise movie Risky Business with a “Mrs Robinson” element.

Plus, we got clip from Free Love, the next episode of Cold Case.

And most importantly: lots of smiles

152 screencaps and a video can now be found in the the Gallery.

Big thanks to Julie for her help with this.
