- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 April 2020Bone Tomahawk is a film that I had only heard of due to it's reputation. It's known for being an intense gory film. Being a western too, I really had to check this film out. What I found was that Bone Tomahawk isn't quite what people made it out to be.
The film was released in 2015, was written and directed by S. Craig Zahler. It features a pretty entertaining cast including Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson and Matthew Fox. The plot of the movie is fairly basic and easy to follow. A quiet little western town suffers a series of murders and kidnappings at the hands of some terrifying cannibals. Kurt Russell and company take it upon themselves to retrieve those who were kidnapped.
Those looking for a terrifying splatter movie as advertised might be a little disappointed. The vast majority of Bone Tomahawk is the development of characters on their journey and very little action or horror. By that, I mean it's kind of uneventful and slow. On the bright side, the dialogue is very well done. I found that each of the four main characters brought a lot of personality to their given roles with the interaction between them on their journey is more than entertaining. The film does pick up on the last quarter or so and this is where its reputation comes from. This portion of the film is highly entertaining and it IS as gory as people make it out to be. But it's not the meat of the story.
As a film, the Bone Tomahawk features some beautiful set pieces and shines as a technical achievement. The environments the characters traverse looks beautifully golden and brown. It's all very natural looking. These colours all pop out of the screen with the high quality image on the bluray. It's a very clear and extremely sharp disc. It makes for a fantastic viewing in terms of visual quality.
Bone Tomahawk is (in my opinion) a very good movie. It's by no means perfect and has a reputation that suggests it's something that it is not. It's a good solid western with some good characters and a few but well deserved scares.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 June 2016This movie just could not be any better made. The acting is first class especially the always good value Kurt Russell and Richard Jenkins. The script is unbelievable in its eloquence. The movie is shot in a way that makes it look like one of the big budget westerns of the 5os and 60s with its lush colours. It reminds me in this respect of a John Ford movie.I am not technical enough to to know if it was shot on film on digital but it has the look of film. The story itself is pretty basic with a rag tag posse of sorts going after some townfolk abducted by some strange Native American tribe of inbreeds and in its latter stages plays out like a horror movie. Its a little slow to start but when it does WOW.It has a particularly violent scene that will have some people wishing they had left the room. All in all it is a very odd western with elements of The Hills Have Eyes but brilliant all the same.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 June 2016I bought this film because it had Kurt Russell in it and I am a fan and was so glad to see him again in the Hateful Eight. I enjoyed it, it is well made and well acted. Russell is excellent as always as is Matthew Fox. It is a little slow by modern movie standards and takes time to build the characters. A trait I think that is often sadly lacking in modern film making which is more wham bam thank-you mam. It is also I think probably more true to life than most films, the good guys do not wade their way through 20-30 bad guys without a scratch. I watch a lot of films and a lot of horror films and I am pretty impervious to most of the violence, however with regard to the violence I have to agree with one of the earlier reviews, there is one particular scene that is truly horrific and kept me awake that night, I am not sure I could bare to watch it a second time, I might just fast forward through that part. I have no doubt that it is that one scene that is responsible for its 18 cert as the rest is reasonably mild by modern standards. Overall an enjoyable film, well made, well acted, well written.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 May 2024Excellent screenplay and acted superbly by all involved. A western that leaves you thinking some scenes over and over. I can almost taste the dust / dirt that film portrays of that period.
Outstanding simple as that. What's more, the use of a score is minimalised, this adds so much to the scenes.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 December 2016Fitfully entertaining. It's a nice idea not to put everything into an alien space-age setting for a change, but into the now equally alien one of the 19th century wild west. kurt and the other assortment of actors do a great job of putting the cowboy ethos to good use whilst struggling against adversity in a hostile terrain ( similar to the Nevada desert ) as the obligatory posse on the trail of a female doctor's abductees. Only these ones turn out to be a weird hybrid species of cave dwelling, cannibalistic, humanoids. That information should be enough to whet your appetite but, if not, be assured that the whole series of events that unfold are not that predictable, not even the end. You are kept there wondering what's gonna happen next, which is what makes this DVD film so good. I get bored stiff by sci-fi fantasies but loved this cowboy fantasy to bits. Great action, entertaining and amusing dialogue, and many unexpected deaths in really odd and gruesome ways. Well, you;d expect that with cannibals wouldn't you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Weird western

5.0 out of 5 stars ESPLENDIDO WESTERN CON TOQUE TERRORIFICOS

5.0 out of 5 stars Brutal. Gory. Unforgiving.
[This is my Letterboxd review. If you want to read my movie reviews there look for the name "A Film Nerds Review"]
I love western movies and I love horror movies. But you know what I love more? When someone finds a clever way to blend both genres together, and delivers an unforgiving brutal western horror. And even more to add to it is a stacked cast that are well versed and known to both genres.
The movie wasted no time to let everyone know the brutality that it's going to bring to the table. As a violent crime committed by two criminals (cameos by horror icons the late Sid Haig and scream franchise veteran David Arquette), set off a chain reaction that causes the kidnapping of a deputy and a doctors daughter. The ones responsible at first glance would appear to be Native. But are immediately identified as a savage tribe of Troglodytes. Cave dwellers who are cannibals and murder indiscriminately as we are all food to them.
The ones leading the search and rescue party are four men. The Sheriff Franklin Hunt (played by Tombstone, The Thing actor Kurt Russell), second Deputy Chicory (played by Richard Jenkins), John Brooder ( played by TV series Lost Matthew Fox) and Arthur O'Dwyer (played by The Conjuring series Patrick Wilson) the husband of the kidnapped woman.
The film is a slow burn but it strikes a good balance to make sure that in the slow moments it's not wasting time. During these moments you get to know these flawed men and see that some are good men bound by the law, one bound by the duty as a loving husband, and one that even though not a good man he's capable of a good deed.
The Troglodytes in this film are terrifying and their capabilities of brutality knows no limits. There will be some really gory moments here that will cause some people to shy away and some to never see the film again because of it. As someone who's seen way more violent horror films. All I can say is, yes the gore is gnarly but I've seen way worse so it didn't affect me.
This skyrocketed as one of my favorite western films and my absolute top favorite western horror film. As many western horror films tend to be more bad than good ones. I definitely most enthusiastically give this gem a recommend.
